Drum Therapy

Drum therapy is a type of minimally-directed hypnotherapy employing rhythmic drumming and guided imagery that is a doorway to the unconscious. It is a right-brain focused approach.

At a minimum drum therapy is a great relaxation technique. With our teens, it even works with ADHD kids  some of the time when conventional talk and hypnotherapy will not. They seem to enjoy it. The drum beat helps keep them focused.

Drumming

We employ a simple rhythmic beat that stimulates alpha brain waves, the waves of relaxation and meditation, in a process called entrainment. This hypnotic rhythm facilitates entering a altered state of consciousness or trance. In the ancient world of the shaman (another archetype), this was known as a shamanic journey. You can download a drumming audio MP3 file (below) and try it yourself. Click here to hear a short sample of the rhythm.

Hypno-Journeying™

This drumming pattern can be used in conjunction with a guided imagery/hypnosis component in a process called Hypno-Journeying™. The guided imagery portion a metaphoric/Jungian archetypal "journey" to one's Power Place or one of the three "spirit" worlds of the ancients--also archetypal.

Once at your Power Place or in one of the three spirit worlds, if you know your power Animal or one of your personal archetypes (generally called "Teachers"),  you can explore or ask questions of them. The questions should not be yes-or-no ones, but ones asking for insight or understanding. The answers that arise are usually in dream language symbolism (see Dream Analysis, coming soon). In this respect you are wakefully dreaming during these experiences. Jung referred to these journeys as active imagination.

Questions such as, "What is my next step? What do I need to see now to move forward in my life?" are examples of the types of questions that can yield insightful answers.

Audios to take a Hypno-Journey™ to your Power Place are available as cassette tape (includes Journey Drumming) or as MP3 download. Audio cassette tapes to meet your Power Animal and Teacher are also available.
