Power Animal

Power Animals along with animal totems probably represent the earliest of Jungian archetypes, along with the mother, father, sibling, and fear-based archetypes. Animal totems have been with us throughout history. Each of the twelve tribes of Israel had animal totems. Jesus was known both as the Lamb of God and the Lion of Judea. Seraphims had four animal faces. The Sphinxes of ancient Egypt and Greece had human heads and lions bodies. Think of all the sports teams and educational institutions that have animal totems.

Indigenous and ancient cultures often referred to these archetypes as "spirit guides." They could be accessed and used for guidance and insight when entered into alternative states of consciousness (ASC). Once familiar with them and skilled at entering ASC, you can access them throughout your day.

We usually have only one Power Animal, but can have other animal archetypes or animal spirit guides. Animal spirit guides are usually not domestic animals, e.g. not usually Spot, your long dead dog, from childhood. Power Animals are usually birds or mammals, but not always.

The horse is an exception to this "not domestic" rule. Horses, even though domesticated, are often animal spirit guides. That is because, despite their domestication by humans, they remain close to their primal ancestors.

Power Animals represent our best Self, if we could drop the psychological baggage of our lives. They tell us something about our core personailty, gifts, and even Shadow elements. When we are living fully into our authentic personal power, we will often model the strengths of our Power Animal. To read about your Power Animal, see Sams and Carson or Andrews below.

When undertaking a shamanic journey to find your power animal, we usually recognize it because it will present itself to us from at least three different perspectives, e.g. front, back, and side. Also, we usually feel a strong attraction to our Power Animal.

On such a journey, if an animal bares its teeth or is threatening in any way, then send it away. If no animal presents itself from three different aspects, you can ask whatever animals you meet if they are your Power Animal. Do not expect a verbal reply. This is not left-brain work. They will give you a sign of some type.
