The Power Place is archetypal. It
represents that special place in nature where we feel safe and in
control. Even if you do not know yours, your unconscious does. Under
the right situation, it will come to you and your can go there.
It
is a place where your energy and the energy of the area resonate
together and are in harmony. It is a place where you feel safe and at
peace. Where you can relax. And where you can meet all kinds of
interesting beings.
It may be in the country, the mountains, at
the beach or ocean, in the desert, or on an island. It can be in the
water or ocean. It may be a place from your childhood. It can be a
place you have never actually been. You may have seen a picture of
it or not. It does not matter, it can come to you and you to it if
your ask.
You do not have to figure it out. This is not a left-brain puzzle. It is an intuitive and natural place. Your special place.
It
can at once be metaphorical and actual. For many it is an actual
place that they have visited. At the same time, it has added
dimensionality that can be explored. It is grounded in both the real
world and the spiritual (archetypal) world. That is what makes it a
special place.
Our teens usually love finding their Power Place
as do many adults. We usually "anchor" it so that they can easily
return there when they want. An "anchor" is a neuro linguistic
programming (NLP) technique. We use it in therapy for relaxation and a
safe place. It is a powerful tool to use with anxiety related problems,
including panic attack, acute and general anxiety, obsessive compulsive
tendency, and phobia.
You can find minor power places in nature
just by sitting or standing in different spots and noticing how you
feel. When you are in one that is right for you, it will feel "right"
and you will want to stay there. Otherwise, you will feel uncomfortable
and want to move.
You can get a similar feeling from sacred places and especially energy vortices...
Sacred Places
Native
peoples know the sacred places in their area. These sometimes are
energy vortices (discussed next). They are often ceremonial sites. If
you are sensitive to such, you can feel the difference when you enter
such a site.
Celts referred to such sacred places as "thin".
Places where the veil between this world and the spirit world are thin
and you can easily "step" through--if you know how, or sometimes
inadvertently.
The old Catholic church in old downtown Santa Fe, NM, is built on one such sacred site. Stone Hedge is another.
Energy Vortices
Energy
Vortices are very special and powerful sacred places. The energy is
really different in such places. Machu Picchu of the Incas is one such
energy vortex. Stone Hedge may be one also. The Chaco Canyon in New
Mexico of the Anasazi is another. My guess is that there is something
about the underlying geology that causes their affects.
In my book, WindWalker,
I tell about my visit to and experiences at the energy vortices around
Sedona, AZ. For me they were so overwhelming that I was glad to leave
after two days. Yet, Sedona is a thriving community. I guess if you
live there, you get used to the energy and can ignore it. Native
Americans used this area for sacred ceremonies.
After thinking
about and experiencing the Sedona vortices, it seems that the
underlying geology probably messes with your brain's neural
transmission. Perhaps in a way analogous to some psychotropic drugs.
Finding you own Power Place
Again,
this is something we routinely do with our counseling clients in
therapy. We use the technique known as Hypno-Journeying™ that combines
standard hypnotherapeutic techniques with drumming. Below is you can
purchase and download this MP3 audio to help you find your own Power
Place.
Alternatively, you can get yourself in a relaxed,
peaceful place and, using the guidelines above, ask for your Power
Place to come to you. Be patient.
Hypno-Journeying™ to Your Power Place
This
is about a 30 minute experience. You need to be in a relaxed, quiet
setting where you want be disturbed. It at once demonstrates
Hypo-Journeying™, guides you to find your Power Place,
and anchors it so that you can easily come back to it. The more you
practice using your anchor and going to your Power Place, the more
effective it will become for you. This is a great tool for reducing
stress and anxiety.
This journey is presented in terms of a shamanic journey to the spirit world. These can be treated as metaphors.
